Born in India and raised on the US-Mexican border, Michelle Tan studied at the University of Texas at Austin (B.A. Government and Philosophy, M.P.Aff. Public Policy) and worked and consulted for research and international development organizations in the US, UK, and Thailand. She was a post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Southeast Asia Studies at the National University of Singapore. Fluent in Thai, she has lived and worked in Thailand for eight years, starting from 1996. She began teaching at Thammasat University in 2001. Her Ph.D. thesis concerned the politics of Thailand’s attempts to reform its basic education system as a case study of contemporary Thai bureaucracy. Research interests include the ongoing politics of education, shifts from clientelistic to programmatic linkages in post-2006 coup Thailand, the nature of intra-elite conflict, and Sino-Thai political assimilation.
